The strangest thing about the work life balance debate is that almost every single famous person in politics, business or even in nonprofits totally lacks work life balance. A Fortune 500 CEO can't really have a balanced life, he has to work 80 hours a week to hold that position. I was a lobbyist and I can assure you a senator in DC works crazy hours and has very little choice in the matter. Even the CEO of an organization like the Red Cross or United Way leads a work dominated life. I know because when you hire someone that you are going to pay millions of dollars a year you expect them to put their work ahead of everything else. Almost every famous person is unbalanced and neglects parts of their lives that most people feel are important. Think about a successful college football coach, they do not even see their families for months on end. Its so odd that we see the danger of a singleminded focus in life yet we reward it so highly financially. I'm sure there is a big truth in that thought, but I can't express it.
